Food poverty in the United Kingdom remains an area of great concern, with 14% of households experiencing food insecurity. Households with children are at a greater risk. Healthy diets are unaffordable for many due to the cost-of-living crisis and poor access to healthy foods. The poorest fifth of the UK population would need to spend an estimated 70% of their income to afford a healthy diet.
Action Against Hunger supports community food pantries in London and the West Midlands. These are grassroots projects that allow food-insecure households to access a variety of foods every week for a small fee. Additionally, our “Healthy Pantry” strategy aims to support partners in operating their community pantries as healthy food environments. We deliver healthy eating training to pantry staff and volunteers to equip them with information to support their shoppers.
In 2024, we also provided strategic and financial support to a local partner to launch a Food and Wellbeing Center in a deprived area of South London. This included renovating a derelict building and launching a free food skills training course for marginalized and disadvantaged community members.
